Halifax Wavecutters Aquatic Club Competitive swimming and water polo in Halifax

Small groups and one head coach who knows every athlete. We're the only club in Halifax that runs both swimming and water polo, and we've been at it since 2005.

Small team. Big impact.

21 years of Wavecutters, September 2005 to today

Practices at Centennial Pool, Halifax

Stroke improvement starts Nov 2, water polo Nov 4

Three programs, one coach

Every group is kept small on purpose. That way the coaching is about your swimmer's stroke, fitness and head for racing, not the whole lane at once.

Practice times and forms
  • Competitive swimming

For swimmers who want to race. Our swim team started in 2007 and has gone from local meets to Senior Nationals. Technique, fitness and the mental side are all planned around each swimmer, and the team looks out for one another.

Ages 11 and over. Two training groups, up to six practices a week.

  • Water polo

One of the toughest team sports there is: swimming, passing, shooting and defending, all without touching the bottom. Senior group for 11 and over, junior group for 11 and under. New to polo? Seniors can start with a once a week, non-competitive intro option.

Summer swimmers: polo doesn't count toward the 2 hour per week Winter Training Policy cap.

  • Stroke improvement

A ten week program for swimmers aged 9 to 15 who want to swim better, with individual coaching from Nickolay Shulga. You don't have to be a Wavecutters member or registered with the club.

Nov 2, 2026 to Jan 13, 2027. Mondays and Wednesdays, 6 to 7 pm, once or twice a week.

Practice times

All practices are at Centennial Pool. Fill out the form for your program and bring it to practice, or call and we'll walk you through it.

21 years. 12 provincial records still held by our swimmers.

We're a smaller club, and we like it that way. The results come from coaching every athlete as an individual, across age groups and genders.

Top Performance Team, 2010
An award scored on points per swimmer, which is how a small team beat the big ones.
Provincial to national
Top score trophies at Provincial and East Coast Championships, plus swimmers at Age Group and Senior Nationals.
Screened, first aid trained
Coaches and volunteers go through criminal record and vulnerable sector checks, and our coaches are trained in first aid.

Meet Nickolay Shulga, our head coach

Nickolay grew up in Kyiv, won the Soviet Union National Junior Championship in water polo in 1978, and went on to play for Dynamo Kyiv's senior team.

He started coaching in 1982 with a Master's in Physical Education and Sport. He went on to coach Ukraine's junior national team and Dynamo Kyiv's pro team, then spent 1994 to 2002 as head coach of Saudi Arabia's national water polo teams. In 2001, nine of his swimmers won 30 medals at the AAU Junior Olympics in Virginia.

He moved to Nova Scotia in 2002, started the water polo program at Dalhousie University in 2003, and founded the Wavecutters in 2005.

“Ever since its inception, the Halifax Wavecutters have been a club that valued technical individual approach. That is my coaching approach.”
